5/3/2022

Antonia (10) and Galyna (3) receive help from ACT Alliance member Hungarian Interchurch Aid at a village in Hungary. Antonia was able to bring only one toy and one colouring book as her family fled. Antonia gave her colouring book to another girl who had nothing to play with. (Names changed to protect children's safety.)

The world is horrified by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. ALWS is building our Lutheran Church response from Australia and New Zealand, even as we pray for so many people in Queensland and NSW suffering from devastating floods. Our Lutheran Church action is part of a worldwide effort by churches of many denominations through the ACT Alliance.

ALWS has stepped out in faith and committed a minimum of $50,000. Donate here.

How do you choose what is most precious when you are forced to flee with so little? Through ALWS, you support the work of churches welcoming refugees fleeing Ukraine.

The ACT Alliance is already having an impact through congregations of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Rostov region of Russia. These generous Christians have welcomed 4,500 refugees with hot meals, clothes, hygiene items, baby supplies and shelter.

The ACT Alliance work we support aims to grow through Hungarian Interchurch Aid, working in Berehove and Lviv in west Ukraine. The focus is on 1,500 children who need shelter, food and medicine. They are among 30,000 refugees seeking safety here.

Meanwhile, ALWS’s regular partner, Lutheran World Federation (LWF), is working with local churches in the countries neighbouring Ukraine to find the best way to welcome and care for refugees.

Forgotten victims of other wars
ALWS has also committed an extra $50,000 to help victims of other wars, in danger of being forgotten as the world focuses on Ukraine:
  • children and families fleeing the war in northern Ethiopia
  • girls and women of Afghanistan in danger from the Taliban
  • survivors hiding in the jungle after the military coup in Myanmar
  • Rohingya children confined to Displaced Persons Camps in Rakhine State in Myanmar.

ALWS maintains our commitment to refugees seeking safety at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, with a focus on school for children with disabilities.

The Lutheran Church of Australia acknowledges that our loving Creator God first gave the land on which we are placed, to the peoples of the First Nations who have walked and cared for this land since before recorded time. We thank God for the land’s Traditional Custodians and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging as we travel this journey of reconciliation in Australia.
