The People

On Sunday, the 17th of April 1949, The founding members of St. Peter's sent a letter to the E.L.C.A. seeking to establish a congregation with 20 signatures. The letter was both German and English. A transcript of the letter is available on this page.

The Place

The congregation would hold services in other churches before finding a home at 5 Lefroy St, North Hobart. The church in Lefroy St was consecrated in 1958, before this, the congregation would be using the New Town Presbyterian church which is now a residence.

The Pastor

Most likely the first Pastor to serve the newly formed congregation was Albert Wundensitz. He took several baptisms and at least one confirmation class during his time. It is uncertain when he was pastor in the congregation, however it is most likely to be from late 49' through to the mid 50s'.

Possibly the first confirmation class; also at the Lefroy Street Church. Confirmed by Pastor Albert W (Mentioned above).

Davey Street Era.

Built 1870, Purchased 1973.

The Davey Street Church was purchased by the Saint Peter's congregation in 1973 for only $55,000. Originally built as a Methodist Church in 1870, the building was designed by Crouch and Wilson of Melbourne and much of the stone was from quarries near Bridgewater and Summerleas. Designed to hold up to 350 worshippers at a time, the building is quite large in size, however, much of the stone and other architectural elements of the church were incredibly weak; it was for this reason that Saint Peter's moved once again to the current grounds at Eastside Lutheran College. The church building has since sold to Hillsong.

Since the move from the Davey Street Church to the current church building at ELC, the Saint Peter's Centre has seen extensive renovations, a new ANZAC garden and several developments at the college.

The Lutheran Church of Australia acknowledges that our loving Creator God first gave the land on which we are placed, to the peoples of the First Nations who have walked and cared for this land since before recorded time. We thank God for the land’s Traditional Custodians and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging as we travel this journey of reconciliation in Australia.
